Chicago, Illinois-- Imagine being a kid and your father is asking you tough questions that the media may ask you one day and you are taking notes preparing for your future of being a NBA basketball player. Well that's the story of Zach LaVine.
A young kid from Washington State, he has the basketball IQ similar to a veteran player and has the athleticism to go along with it. That is a great addition to any organization and is a dual threat to any opponent. LaVine is a player that is bound for success on the professional level as he continues to learn the game every day.
Now at the NBA combines, LaVine is sitting down as the media is asking him those hard questions his father prepared him for. LaVine with a smile on his face is reflecting on the time he was a kid only dreaming of this day. Thinking to himself about all the hard work and dedication, and the blood, sweat, and tears that came along with this process of becoming a professional athlete. With all of these thoughts running in his mind, it's finally hitting him that his dream to become a professional basketball player and play in the NBA is only a month away.
"Life {teaches} you {that} Being humble, {Understanding} everything is not going to go your way, {but} you gotta work really hard go at it to the best of your abilities, and be full hearted everything happens for a reason, God has you in his heart" said LaVine when he was asked about what lessons he has learned in his life that he can take with him into the NBA.
LaVine understands where he's at in life is a blessing and a testament to hard work and is willing to do whatever it takes to continue to improve his game to continue to compete on a high level. LaVine’s game is special and unique to him. His game actually resembles his personality. LaVine was asked to describe his game on one word. He laughs and goes into deep thought thinking of all the possible words he could say and stated;
"I don't know if I can describe my game with just one word." said LaVine. Then he thought about it and recollected his thoughts and said "Smooth, I feel like I have a smooth game,"
Which is quite accurate if you've ever watched any games or highlight reels of LaVine. His game is that smooth. He is always in the right spot when the ball is given to him and makes the right plays but he does it so "smoothly." Even on fast breaks when he’s given the ball because of his athleticism, of course, he's going to do a windmill dunk but he does it in a flawless manner, which makes it look "smooth." LaVine has a jump shot that looks perfect. And the way he can come off the screen and shoot the three-ball so effectively, but does it in such a "smooth." way.
That's what makes LaVine so special. He's a killer on the court, but does it in a smooth fashion that would leave an opponent dumbfounded as to what has happened.
You don't have to tell LaVine these things because he already knows his attributes. LaVine is more focused on how to continue excelling so he can improve his game even more so. LaVine is the type of player that you love to watch because all of the basketball fundamentals are there and he's still getting better everyday. Though his nickname is Young Hollywood, there isn't anything superficial about this young player. LaVine, down to earth and humble, understands the importance of remaining that way regardless of where he is in life. That is attributed to great parenting and LaVine not letting the moment overtake who he is. Organizations will look at player’s actions on and off the court and LaVine is the total package. Not only is he a great player on the court, but a great person off the court. LaVine is the true definition of a role model and those characteristics will grant LaVine a long and prosperous career in this league.
It is important to take note that LaVine recognizes areas of his game where he needs a little improvement whether that's on defense, or taking on a new role in the league. He may be required to run point guard for whatever team he ends up on which will require him to get his teammates involved. With that being said, with the mindset that LaVine has he should have no problem making those adjustments. The great thing about LaVine is he's a quick learner and knows the game of basketball. So get your popcorn ready and watch a future star in the making.
